When you're designing a solution it's almost inevitable that you want to put all the bells and whistles in, and put your own mark on it. Keep the design functional and as simple as the technology allows it. This will aid in easier understanding, fault finding, handover and building.
All of the major vendors: Cisco, Juniper, VMWare..... all have best practices, white papers and design guides. Use them! It's as simple as typing a search in Google to find them. You'll find already developed design patterns which you can adapt easily and chance has it that if you follow these design patterns, the vendors will provide support packages around them.
There are so many companies delivering solutions where their network department, virtualization department and storage department are all working in isolation from each other. When it comes close to delivery the whole solution is disjointed. Stand at the forefront. Bring all the departments together and get them talking from the start. Each department will have requirements from the other and vice versa.
Not everyone is an expert in everything, right? If you're unsure something will work or not, or you want a second opinion ask for a peer-review. This is common practise in larger organisations and typically highlights any issues along the design path.
If you're confident a new direction is required, back it up. If you are an SME in a particular area, highlight it and bring in/drive change.
